Film reviews 2016

Some of the movies I've watched throughout 2016

Star Wars: Episode VII - the Force Awakens
Genre: SciFi, action, adventure

... They stick to the familiar formula: an attack of the bad guys (Empire vs First Order), droid with crucial information (R2-D2 vs BB-8), woman gets captured (Princess Leia vs Rey), Rebellion goes to the rescue (although Rey does actually safe herself. What a woman), main character discovers he/she has the power of the Force (Luke vs Rey), they don't know who their real parents are and a Death Star must be destroyed. It's basically a reboot of A New Hope, which, I welcomed with open arms. The original cast is back: Han Solo, princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2 and of course Chewbacca... (read more)

Deadpool
Genre: superhero

Wade Wilson is a, euh, rather bad ass guy. Not a superhero, but rather an asshole who beats bigger assholes. At one point, when everything seems to go smoothly for Wade, he's diagnosed with cancer. The aggressive kind, spread to his lungs, liver, prostate and brain. You know, the things you can live without. A rather mysterious, stereotype guy in a suit meets Wade and offers him a 'cure', which Wade eventually takes him up upon. First mistake. That is when he leaves Wade behind and becomes Deadpool. Captain Deadpool. No, no no no, just Deadpool. Yeah. (read more)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Genre: drama, horror

The story is set in the Regency England. For the last 70 years or so the country has been infected by the undead as a result of the plague. If you could not fight and defend yourself, you were doomed to join the unmentionables. That is why mr Bennet has taken his girls to China to have them trained in combat. In result, the 5 sisters Bennet are locally famous, not only for their beauty, but for their deadly warrior skills as well. On a random day at the beginning of autumn, mrs Bennet walks into the living room and says: 'mr Bennet, have you heard!? Netherfield Park is let at last!' (read more)

Zootropolis
Genre: Disney animation

Set in an animal ruled world. Prey and preditor are living side by side and Judy Hopps, a bunny, is our main character. She grows up in a lovely town surrounded with her many family members and friends. Her parents are carrot farmers and when they try to convince her that is the best career path for a bunny, she resolute replies that she wants to be a police officer in Zootropolis. The first ever police bunny. Of course she passes all the classes at the police academy against all odds... (read more)

Captain America: Civil War
Genre: Marvel

In comparison to other Marvel films this movie leans more towards "Age of Ultron serious" than light hearted humor like in Thor or Avengers Assemble. The funny scenes that are in it, are proper funny though. Laugh out loud funny. I was lucky enough to watch the movie with a crowd who reacted the same way I did. At one point, in the least romantic setting possible, Cap kisses Agent 13. It's so Cap. Awkward but sweet, and long overdue. Not to mention that Bucky and Sam (Falcon - Anthony Mackie) are sitting in a tiny Beetle, witnessing the whole thing. After Agent 13 leaves and Cap looks over, you get your expected boys reaction when they see... (read more)

Before we go
Genre: Romance

It's Chris Evans' directorial debut and he did fine job. The script is fantastic and the characters incredibly likeable. The story builds up to some unexpected revelations and it makes you wonder whether they'll end up together or not. They truely hit some high and low points. You can't help but rooting for them. It's a proper romance, but not with your classis predictable ending. Evans brings it with such tenderness and care you belief it could actually happen to anyone. Well, not to me. I'm in bed by 10pm usually x) (read more)

Arrival
Genre: sci fi

I left the cinema not exactly knowing how to behave anymore. All my personal issues seemed so small and trivial. Not important. Granted, they are not, but it is one of those films that puts you right back in your place: a tiny tiny tiny spot in the immeasurable universe. The question whether we are alone has never really been a question to me. But the majority of alien sci fi films depict these unknown forms of life as violent creatures whose sole purpose in life is to destroy humanity. Well, save E.T. (read more)
