My very first week in London

Hallooooooo,

If you could only but hear me say it. That’s one thing I truly miss. You can’t say ‘halloooooo’ in a Dutch way to an English man. It just doesn’t work. So every chance I get (mainly skype) I always start the conversation with: ‘Hallooooo’.

That being said, I welcome you to this little blog post thingy. I know I said I wouldn’t blog and that I would just film everything. And I did. But seeing the final result of the little clip of my first week in London, I think it is more appropriate that the written word accompanies the little clip.

Also, keep in mind that after the first month or so, I will have a routine here. So it is possible (and very likely) that my day to day life just will not be that intresting to share with you. Don’t expect this to be a weekly thing!

Then, the reason why this is written in English is very easy. Well, I actually have two reasons. First of all, since my first abroad exprerience I have some friends in other parts of the world. Unfortunatly they don’t speak Dutch, so the only way to communicate is in English. A second reason is because I start to sound like Astrid Bryan. Not that anything is wrong with her, I just don’t like the fact that I would mix Dutch with English. Plus, bonus, I can practice my written English. Whoop whoop.

Then, the actual update!

My first week in London. As you can see in the clip (if you haven't, it is linked at to bottom of this post), it excisted mostly out of traveling and walking around in London. And I visited Greenwich with my parents last week. My first week at RDP Creative is also gone by. I will cover two topics: the internship and my host family.

Internship
Like most of you know I’m doing an internship at RDP Creative in Soho London. They provide merchandising for movies. So they have clienst like 20th Century Fox, Universal, Disney, Disney Pixar, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Novotel, etc. The first week was overwhelming, but thank god they are used to having interns!! Every day I learn more about the company and all the files and programs they work with. It is very nice to not be thrown in. My first day was hectic enough, so I’m glad the rest of the week went smoothly.

I probably should also tell you how awesome the office is. If you like Marvel pictures though. If not, than the next few lines won’t probably be so intresting for you. In the hall way, on the staircase and in the meeting room are almost live-size statues of Captain America, Spiderman, Batman, The Hulk, Superman and Iron Man. I know not all of them are Marvel, but it is like a generalization, ya knooo. And I say almost live-size, ‘cause hello, try to imagine a live sized Captain America or Superman on the staircase. There wouldn’t be enough space for the torsos alone!! But I have to admit: I kinda wish Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans would be really standing there in costume... I’ll try to film it in the next couple of weeks so you can have an idea. Anyways, I think the office looks amazing and I’m gonna enjoy it as long as I don’t take it for granted.

It also takes me about an hour to get to my work placement. In London terms: I live very close to my job! oO

Host family
My host family is super nice. Very friendly and welcoming. But, even though I can’t leave the house without them knowing about it (which is normal), they let me do whatever. If I like to be on my own, that’s fine. If I’m in the mood to be sociable than I can always go down for a conversation. And yes, those who know me very well know that I don’t mind being on my own. But I still can be very sociable and even after a day of being social at work, it is nice to be able to come home knowing that there is a friendly face asking how my day went. ‘Cause otherwise it would be very isolating. No friends (except for Molly, but she doesn’t live that nearby) no family. But it is still the first week and I have many more to go.

Home sickness: ok. Not much affected by it.
London city: ok. I still like it.
New people: x 1000. I can’t even remember who’s working at RDP and who isn’t. Pretty embarrassing. But hey, I’m the new intern!
New words: Just bin it = throw it in the bin; peckish= craving a snack

Alright, see ya next time!

If you haven't seen the clip yet, here it is. Enjoy!!

Note: my English isn’t perfect and of course I’m going to make mistakes, but that’s what I’m here for! Writting a blog on a friday isn't probably the best thing to do either ...
